WALKING TOUR IN ENGLISH

Jewish Residents of Bubeneč Villa District I. / ENGLISH

Sunday, December 15, 2024; 2.30 p.m.

This walking tour through the villa neighborhood in Bubeneč will introduce the conservative owners of the grand houses located along a former homestead called Zátorka. We will hear stories of the most important entrepreneurs from the era of the First Czechoslovak Republic as well as unknown families who lived here before WWII.

We will take a look at the villa of Rudolf Slánský, the right hand of the 1st communist president Klement Gottwald, who eventually ordered Slánský’s execution per instructions from Josip Stalin. Then we will come to the villa of the 2nd Czechoslovak president Edvard Beneš and also the famous villa Bianca, designed by important Czech architect Jan Kotěra (student of Austrian genius Otto Wagner, co-founder of the Art Nouveau style in Central Europe). We will learn about the people who lived here and find out who was behind the foundation of the Holešovice Exhibition Grounds and the Museum of Decorative Arts.
